Keith and I went backpacking for the first time this last weekend. It was a blast! (see our photos page for some fun shots)
We went with Greg and Gina, and Kessia and Josh (friends from Michigan). I took off work Friday, so Keith and I could get a good start, Keith took off the afternoon and we left pretty soon after he got off.
The plan was to meet up with Josh, who had to work the day before and hike up to where Greg, Gina, and Kessia were because they had been hiking since Thursday.
Our plan did work out quite like that, but it worked out in the end. When we all got together we hiked 3 miles (mostly in the dark) to our campsite. Keith and I set up our tent and ate supper of Ginger Teriyaki Rice (freeze dried backpacking food). Then all of us put our food in net bags and hung them on a pole so the bears couldn’t get to it. This is something new that I didn’t know we had to do.
Later in the night it rained, but no lightening and no one got wet.
Keith and I woke up at around 9 am and Greg and Gina invited us to their tent where we played rook with playing cards, good times. We had oatmeal for breakfast and packed up camp, by this time it was about noon and we began our hike that was almost 6 miles.
It was a beautiful hike with woods on our left and lake superior on our right. we were quite a bit above the lake on a cliff and the water was really clear. We also, saw some teenage boys in a cove jump in the water, they jumped right back out (it was pretty chilly, as many probably know).
We also saw a waterfall falling from the cliff and were able to stand right where the water was falling, it was crazy to see the water plunge over the edge slowly forming the rock to a smooth edge.
We got to our new campsite close to supper time, set up camp, put our feet in superior, skipped some rocks that were really flat and very pretty with all the different colors, and went to eat our supper. Keith and I had chili, it tasted good, but not very good on the digestion.
Greg and Josh stayed in camp while the rest of us went for a little hike without our packs. We saw some amazing scenery and made it just in time to see a beautiful sunset by the cliff. We all went to bed and woke up to a storm: lightening, thundering, wind , the whole works. It was kinda scary. Keith and I got wet in out tent, but survived.
We soon packed up camp and made a 3 mile hike back to parking in a very humid atmosphere. After, some refreshing food in town, we all said our goodbye’s, it was kinda sad leaving God’s awesome nature and coming back to the rush of activity in our own town, but showers feel really good.
